Research Area Obesity and metabolic syndrome; regulation of adipocyte metabolism and of adipocyte- muscle cross-talk. Description of Research Dr. Zemel’s laboratory focuses on endocrine and nutritional modulation of mitochondrial function, energy metabolism and oxidative and inflammatory stress. This work encompasses cellular and molecular approaches to the study of adipocyte, skeletal muscle cell and macrophage metabolism and interactions, animal modelling of predicted outcomes from cellular studies, and clinical studies in obesity and the metabolic syndrome to evaluate efficacy of approaches developed in our laboratory.
