FIREFIGHTER-EMT I
$24.78 Hourly

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general direction, responds to Basic Life Support medical transport situations and provides emergency medical service at the
State of Alaska EMT-I level along with transport of patients to and from medical facilities. Typical responsibilities include the
following:
Operates ambulance and other related emergency equipment. Works independently or with other emergency medical servicespersonnel to provide care and transportation of injured or ill persons. Assesses general condition of injured or ill individuals bynoting vital signs, pupil dilation, and level of consciousness, medical history, physical exams, and mechanism of injury.
Completes patient reports and billing forms per department protocols.
Administers necessary first aid and emergency care to stabilize the patient for transport; administers CPR; administers oxygen;may help administer patient’s prescription medication including aspirin, Epi-pens, multi-dose inhalers, nitroglycerin, and over thecounter (OTC) medications; applies splints, bandaging, cervical collars, backboards, KED spine protection systems, tractionsplints, oral airways and similar EMT I level adjuncts.
Operates independently at the EMT-I level with successful completion of the preceptorship period.
Completes other related duties as assigned, including but not limited to, station and vehicle cleaning, education activities,inventories and daily equipment checks, support activities for firefighting such as rehabilitation station, house cleaning and similaractivities.
Participates in required training to improve and maintain emergency medical knowledge and skills. Participates in drills.
As firefighter it is required to commit and effectively operate fire-fighting equipment, extinguish fires, render emergency medicalcare. The incumbent has knowledge of preventive maintenance and repair of a wide variety of fire department equipment,apparatus and tools; CPR and emergency medical techniques; local water systems, hydrant systems, road systems; operation of firealarm system and station operations.
The ability to think clearly and quickly; analyze situations accurately and take prompt effective action during emergency
situations; learn operating procedures; work cooperatively with others with their respect and confidence; function with a high
degree of independence; keep simple records; prepare reports and follow oral and written directions. Participates in fire prevention
activities including business fire safety inspections, pre-fire plans and public safety education programs. The firefighter is
expected to maintain excellent physical conditioning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
An Associate or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is highly desirable but not required.
Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment.
A valid Alaska Driver's License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter I or an equivalent certification as determined by the Fire Chief.
Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I; OR
Certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as an EMT-Basic or an EMT-Advanced (as appropriate to the position), however, applicants must obtain State of Alaska EMTcertification prior to appointment.
NOTE: Appointment to a Firefighter – EMT I position will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of
the psychological assessment and the medical evaluation.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the physical ability to perform strenuous physical activities including life threatening firefighting in emergency situations;
running, walking, crouching or crawling; moving equipment; lifting, carrying, or otherwise moving injured/deceased people; climbing
stairs/ladders performing lifesaving and rescue procedures; walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time; operating
assigned equipment and vehicles.
Working Conditions:
Position requirements include: ability and willingness to work rotating day and night shifts, holidays, weekends, scheduled and
emergency overtime, be available for required on-call duty and perform work outdoors, year round, in all weather conditions. The
work may involve intensive life-threatening situations, and exposure to fire, smoke, noise, body fluids, sharp instruments, chemicals,
and hazardous equipment.

require candidates to meet the revised examination procedures or pass the revised examinations to maintain eligibility for appointment.
TESTING SCHEDULE
Testing dates and an exam schedule have been established. The testing dates are scheduled for April 8-9-10-11, 2013. Testing will be
held at the Juneau Fire Station and the Hagevig Regional Fire Training Center. See the Human Resources Web Page for details.
CLOSING DATE
A completed CBJ application form Number P001, resume AND a criminal background check AND driving record issued by the
Department of Public Safety in the applicant’s state of residence must be received by the Human Resources & Risk Management
Division on or before the close of business March 26, 2013.
